Developing Habits for Success in Business

By Colin Scotland

β€œWe are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not an act, but a habit”

β€” Aristotle

Do you want to lose weight or get in shape?

Do you want to succeed in business?

The key to both of these is the same.

Seriously.

You must choose the RIGHT thing to do, and do it. Repeatedly.

10 Step Marketing Checklist to More Leads and Sales

You do not need to go extreme.

Just make small changes to your daily actions and over time you will reap amazing benefits.

Let's break that down.

If you stop eating entirely for seven days will you lose weight?

Yes.

However, you will also be dead, or close to it πŸ™

How about if you eat a sensible three meals a day and cut out the snacks in between?

After seven days, you probably won't feel much different, right?

Give that small change 3, 6 or even 12 months and the results will be monumental.

In the game of business, it is easy to become overwhelmed and confused at the volume of things that NEED to get done.

All too often we thrash around, not achieving very much.

I used to do this all the time.

Perhaps you are the same?

If we apply the weight-loss logic to the game of business, there is a profound lesson we can learn from it.

Doing small things, over time add up to great results.

If you repeatedly focus on doing the RIGHT thing, the end results will stack up.

I am not talking about the one-off, quick fix things here.

Like with the weight-loss, it is about a shift in your behaviour and actions to reap benefit over time.

What kinds of changes or habits?

Taking the time to plan your marketing correctly so you are focusing on the areas that are going to yield the best results for your business.

These could include dedicating a small amount of time each day to show up consistently on Twitter.

Whichever social media channel(s) you decide to go all in on.

Writing a helpful blog article once per week.

Think about it, one blog article per week.

Perhaps one hour of work tops.

In 3 short months, you will have a bank of twelve content pieces that you can share with your audience.

Twelve valuable resources that will take them further along the journey to getting to know like and trust you.

In one year, 52.

Guess what this kind of stuff does?

Imagine fertilising the soil, sowing flower seeds and then watering, regularly.

Like laws of nature if we do this, what happens?

Flowers grow.

Relationships spring from the ground.

Business is not magical. Marketing is not magic.

It is just the fixed laws of nature and humanity.

By focusing on doing the right thing in small increments, you will create cumulative momentum for your business.

Working efficiently on the RIGHT actions consistently is the key to your success.

If you do this, you will succeed.

If you do not, you will not. It is that simple.

The difference between success and failure is CONSISTENCY and PERSEVERANCE.

In our world of quick fixes and instant gratification, our expectations are distorted from reality.

Think about it.

Imagine you pick up a guitar for the first time.

Would you expect to play like one of the greats on the first day?

Would you walk into a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy for the first time and expect to come out with a black belt strapped around your waist?

Distorted expectations.

In business, all too often, we throw resources at something and expect them to yield magical results.

We get frustrated when they do not.

I see this time and again teaching business owners how to generate leads and engagement on Twitter.

I teach them the tools and techniques.

How to hold the guitar.

How to execute the perfect armbar.

How to get followers and drive engagement.

Where does it go wrong?

EXECUTION.

I guarantee that with the right instruction if you pick up a guitar for ten minutes EVERY day.

In a few weeks, you will be playing your favourite songs.

If you attend a BJJ academy twice per week. You will be able to execute the perfect armbar.

If you spend ten minutes per day doing the right things on social media, you WILL generate leads and engagement for your business.

Hint, the RIGHT thing does not include watching videos of cats πŸ˜‰

With this new perspective, the game of life and business suddenly becomes more straightforward.

Aristotle said: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit".

In the coming months commit to making one small change in how you play the game of business.

Execute consistently until your actions become a habit.

Watch the flowers grow.

Next Steps

Set some goals around what you want to achieve.

Play the guitar.

Get a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu.

Generate leads from social media.

You decide.

Learn the RIGHT actions to take.

Take that action. Consistently.

Your actions will become habits.

Your habits will yield results over time.
